| Art Exhibit - Gertrude Mellon
... Here she rediscovered her love of oil painting and the freedom it allows. The artists that have influenced her during her early career are Cezanne and Matisse, later Mondrian and Diebenkorn.
Growing up in rural Ireland, combined with living in or near big cities has greatly influenced her subject matter. The encroachment of the city into the landscape pushing up and out, yet if left untended as in a garden, the city soon turns to urban decay. This dichotomy in addition to fleeting images, speed, time passing and life's progression is what she paints in the abstract.
Emotions and subject matter dictate how she paints. She began by sketching her ideas roughly, then developing them on canvas, combining bold and small precise strokes to capture a feeling. Sometimes I will layer paint transparently over each other allowing the underneath layers to show through.
Her work is in private and corporate collections throughout the Bay Area and Ireland.
