Two Sunday Workshops with Max Strom

Sunday 18 July
1:00 - 3:00 pm. The Power of Intention
4:15 - 6:45 pm. A Life Worth Breathing

Discounted Price for Both Workshops: $95 in Advance, or $115 Day of the Event

The Power of Intention - All Levels of Students

Just as hydrogen and oxygen, depending on how they are mixed together, can produce either fire or water, asana (posture) practice and intention and breath can produce either “just exercise” or can revolutionize our lives, depending again on how they are mixed together.

This flowing workshop begins gently and then builds momentum.  At the apex of heat and breath we will move directly into a special sequence of asanas to bring the mind into stillness and the body into a new state of energy.  This class is both challenging and very healing.

Price for Single Workshop: $45 in Advance or $55 the Day of the Event.

A Life Worth Breathing - All Levels of Students

This special workshop will focus on lifting you up from burn-out and re-igniting your inner fire, transforming depression into inspiration and anger into courage.  The Workshop will include a talk based on ideas from Max's new book, A Life Worth Breathing (April, 2010) – which we carry in Avalon's bookstore – and  gentle, breath-centered flow, breathing, and meditation.

Price for Single Workshop: $55 in Advance or $65 the Day of the Event.

Notes on the Workshops:

- Do not eat at least two hours before practice and eat lightly.
- Before class, tell Max of any preexisting injury or special condition.
- Workshops are not advisable if you are pregnant

1:30 - 4:30 pm both days

Shastri's two-day Workshop, which is not like any other we know of offered in the United States, has been specifically designed to complement Mark Singleton's talk on the history of modern yoga, which was given on 12 June.

A Major (Free!) Saturday Night Event

Slides and Talk with Mark Singleton, Author of Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice (Oxford University Press, 2010)

Saturday, 12 June 2010
8:00 pm

This lecture and slide show by one of the world's leading yoga historians is free and a must for anyone in the Bay Area who teaches (or practices) yoga seriously.

In the few months since its publication, Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice, has radically overturned popular assumptions about the history of yoga. In the book, based on his doctoral research at Cambridge University, Mark Singleton traces the complex interactions between ancient Indian meditative practices, 19th century British gymnastics, and Indian wrestling traditions that gave rise in the 20th century to what is known today as modern Yoga.

If you've heard that Yoga asanas (postures) are thousands of years old, you're likely to be startled by the evidence in Mark's book (and talk).

Despite its revolutionary claims, the high quality of Singleton's research has brought his book rave reviews not only from academic historians, but from mainstream yoga sources (including Yoga Journal) and a long list of influential figures in the yoga world as well, including John Friend, Founder of Anusara Yoga.

Mark's lecture is complemented by a special two-day Workshop taught by Anirudh Shastri we have planned for the following weekend (19-20 June) on his traditional yoga training as a teenager in India. The Workshop is described in the next section.

Price: We feel that Mark Singleton's lecture is so important to the yoga community that we're making it free to everyone.

Bring along: Nothing needed but your curiosity and questions. We expect an active give-and-take discussion.

A few snippets from reviews of Mark's book are given below:

"Mark Singleton's Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice is an outstanding scholarly work which brings so much insight and clarity to the historic and cultural background of modern hatha yoga. I highly recommend this book... for all sincere students of yoga."
John Friend, Founder of Anusara Yoga

"Singleton's radical, meticulously documented, sensitive analysis makes perfectly clear that what has come to be regarded as a veritable icon of Indic Civilization – postural yoga – is, in fact, unambiguously the hybrid product of colonial and post-colonial globalization.
Professor Joseph S. Alter, University of Pittsburgh. Author of Yoga in Modern India: The Body Between Science and Philosophy

Cultivating Lovingkindness: Walking the Path with Heart
A workshop with Jackie Long

Sunday, 6 June 2010
1:30 - 4:30 pm

Thousands of years ago, the Buddha taught the twin principles of mindfulness and compassion. He encouraged the practice of metta, or Lovingkindess, as a way for us to realize our inherent capacity to love ourselves and others fully, deeply and freely. It is a practice that "undoes" all that has gotten in the way of our ability to love ourselves and others well. It unshackles the armor that we have accrued around our hearts. It frees us up to give and receive love in the same, easy, natural way that we breathe in and out.

Honoring the body as a sacred temple and the heart as a transformative vehicle on the spiritual path, we will engage in this Workshop in guided meditations, breathing practices, gentle yoga sequences, and restorative and yin poses to deepen our capacity to feel compassion for ourselves (and all aspects of ourselves) and others (and all aspects of others). There will be time allotted for self-reflection, journaling, creative expression, and meditation throughout the day to more deeply integrate the metta practice. Give yourself this opportunity to cultivate Lovingkindness...to realize your potential to love yourself and others well.

Asanas will be gentle. Beginners are welcome.

Samantha Shakti and Girish
Special class with Samantha Shakti and acclaimed sacred music performing artist Girish

  • Tuesday, December 15th 2009
    7:15 - 8:45 pm

Join Sam and Girish in a 1.5 hour dynamic Anusara Yoga class accompanied by Girish. The weaving together of the soulful sounds of Girish and and the inspirational teaching style of Sam will take your practice to new heights.

Girish is an eclectic artist with roots in jazz, world, and sacred music. His musical talents find expression in a wide array of instruments - including tablas, world percussion, guitar, harmonium, and voice.

For as long as he can remember, Girish has created rhythm to accompany life. When he was eight years old, his parents gave him a little red snare drum as a bargaining tool to stop him from banging on everything else in the house. Drumming has always been instinctual to Girish, flowing freely from his fingers and knowing no musical bounds. In his teens, he started experimenting with pop, rock, jazz and orchestral music. His first experience of music as sacred art came in college, playing with jazz bands. "During improvisational sessions," he recalls, "there were these unexplainable moments of synchronicity and intuition that felt like magic." These moments came just as Girish was feeling pulled toward a sacred life. A college philosophy class inspired him to explore spirituality through Kundalini yoga, meditation, and the study of Eastern scriptures. By the time of his college graduation, Girish was so deep into these practices that he decided to move into an ashram in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Thus began an unexpected journey-a seeming detour that inadvertently nourished his musical artistry.

Girish continues to explore and expand musical borders, and has found new avenues for his artistic expression. Yearning to express the power of Sanskrit mantras through his own voice has been a driving force behind his CD's, Reveal (Spirit Voyage Music, May 2004) and Shiva Machine (Spirit Voyage Music, April 2006) and his new DVD, Yoga Vision.

As a session player, Girish's work has aligned him with the likes of producers Glen Ballard (Dave Matthews Band, Alanis Morrisette) and Michael Brook (Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour) as well as the creative team at Lucas Art. His talents are featured on some of the most popular recordings in the world music/new age field today.

Ben Thomas
"From Abhyasa to Sadhana - Evolution of the Practice on the Mat to the Practice of Living Workshop"

  • Sunday, March 22, 2009
    1:30 - 4:00 pm
    Signing 4:00 - 5:00 pm

As developing and practicing Yogis, we come to realize that everything evolves; further, that to evolve, one must involve. Involution allows evolution. We also realize that as we practice "on the mat," all the realities and lessons of Life expose themselves for our consideration. We also observe that the lessons learned on the mat become a part of our everyday activities - the Practice of Living.

Abhyasa is the practice on the mat. Patanjali states in Sutra I.12 that "it is the practice, with detachment, that is the means to stilling the fluctuations of the consciousness." Chapter 2 of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Sadhana Pada, is about the practice of living, about the Practice of the integrated yogi.

In this workshop, we will practice Yoga while considering, exploring, and absorbing these concepts. We will seek, with intention, our own confirming realization and evidence, during the practice and through reflection, that truly the Practice on the Mat does transform into artfully and skillfully living Life. The workshop will be a combination of Asana, Pranayama, Dhyana (meditation), and reflection on the experiences.

Ayurveda and Yoga: Cultivating Prana in Vinyasa Yoga with Scott Blossom

  • Saturday, December 13th 2008
    12:00 - 4:00 pm

The sister sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda have evolved side by side over millennia to offer us ways to listen to the sacred pulse of Life. Integrating Ayurvedic wisdom into our yoga practice, diet, and lifestyle is one of the primary ways to build our prana, or life force.

In yoga practice being powerful has little to do with force. True power manifests when we make space for the free movement of Prana within and around ourselves This workshop focuses on practices for cultivating our prana because the hectic pace and stress of modern life can disrupt its flow and deplete our life force. In the Yoga tradition we have the image of Shiva as Nataraja, the eternal dancer, to remind us that the dynamic rhythms of each day, each season, and our individual lives are like a dance that we must learn and refine for the expression of our full potential.

Join Scott for an afternoon of vinyasa yoga and Ayurvedic insight into how to live in harmony with our prana on and off the mat.

Scott Blossom teaches a style of Hatha Yoga Vinyasa and Yoga therapy that is informed by his training as a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, an Ayurvedic Consultant, and his studies of Tantric philosophy and ritual. He is known for his inspiring, down-to- earth approach, sense of humor, and ability to make the subtle, energetic aspects of practice accessible. Scott is blessed to have had the expert guidance of his teachers Dr. Robert Svoboda, Zhander Remete, and Erich Schiffmann. He is a faculty member of the Kripalu School of Ayurveda and regularly presents at national yoga conferences.

Karma Moffett's Tibetan Bell Experience
SF Artist, Musician, Master Bell Ringer...

Dates/Times:
Saturday, December 6th 2008
From 8:15 - 10:15 pm

Karma Moffett has developed, over a period of thirty years, an exceptional program of music, which is presented to the community as a Wish-Bestowing Ceremony. He uses his unique collection of instruments, featuring antique Tibetan Bowls, Bells, Tingsha, Longhorn, and Conch Shells.

Patterning the ceremony as a symbolic journey to Tibet, Karma begins by playing Native American Flute, to fly the audience to the Tibetan Plateau. Then Karma plays the Tibetan Longhorn, escorting his audience into the monastery. There follows a journey through the Bowls, from the low tones to the high, using varying patterns, creating different harmonics amongst the attuned and paired sets of bowls. Next resound the higher notes of the Bells. The journey upwards culminates in the highest-pitched tones of the Tingsha and the Conch Shells. Gently, Karma reverses the pattern, back downward through the Bells and Bowls. At the end, he dissolves the movement of sound into the stillness of the Great Mystery. This entire process takes about ninety minuets.

There is another aspect to the ceremony. It is becoming widely accepted that pure sound tones and harmonics have a positive and penetrating impact upon a person's natural healing system. Karma has developed his collection of instruments and his ceremony with this understanding as his guide. When experiencing the ceremony in an intimate setting, one really feels the Longhorn and the Bowls move the energy of the lower chakras. The Bells move the heart and middle chakras. The Tingsha and Conch Shells stimulate the crown and higher chakras. Thus, the journey to the highlands is also a journey through the chakras.

One of the outstanding qualities of Karma's Bell Set is its harmonic attunement. Karma has sifted through nearly five thousand bowls over a period of thirty years to accumulate twenty-five bowls. These were selected for their purity and clarity of sound, sustained resonance, and harmonic blending or pairing with the other bowls within the set. The bowls, bells, and tingsha are handmade, using from five through twelve metals, including meteorite. The varying thickness of the metals produces a variety of tones and harmonics, within each bowl. When the bowls are played in runs or struck as pairs, their harmonics penetrate the physical and subtle bodies of the listeners. The audience easily relaxes into a natural state of meditation.

Karma's mastery of circular breathing, which he applies to the Longhorn, Native American Flute, and Conch Shells, allows him to bring the pure tones of each instrument to the listener in an unbroken stream. When he plays the Longhorn at fairs and expos, people are drawn from all corners of the grounds, as metal is drawn to the magnet, to experience the power and variety of tones, which Karma achieves. In an enclosed setting, the sound is even more remarkable.

One experiences the ceremony in candlelight, in a warm, intimate setting, bathed in the rich sound of the bells. People have been so moved by these ceremonies that they have returned, bringing members of their families and communities with them. They have also had Karma play background music for their own celebrations, birthdays, weddings, and rites of passage. His music is extensively used as background for meditation, yoga, t'ai chi, massage. Karma dedicates his performance to Love, Compassion and Peace.

  • Sianna is an internationally recognized Anusara Yoga teacher who delights in sharing these teachings with poetry, stories and expressive insight. In 1990, she made a courageous leap from the doorways of medical school to an adventurous and uncertain route of traveling the world to study yoga and the healing arts. In 1993, while traveling through India, she stumbled upon the beginnings of her Tantric yoga influence with an impromptu arrival at the Ganeshpuri ashram of Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. Just a few weeks earlier, she had celebrated her birthday by sitting on a boulder in the currents of the Ganges River while contemplating her life, listening to the water and hearing the promise within to follow the path of her heart. This promise has been the guiding light of her life and she feels a great rush of love for all her teachers who have helped her on this journey. In 1995, Sianna had the exquisite blessing of meeting her life-long mentor John Friend. Upon being in the same room with him, a lightning bolt of awareness seared through the center of her heart and she knew the currents of the Ganges had guided her to this momentous occasion.ÊShe apprenticed John for many years and continues to be near him as often as possible. In 2001, she had a most auspicious meeting with Dr. Douglas Brooks and began to deepen her studies of Tantra with her heart and mind on fire.ÊIt is the dance of Nataraja that has been a calling force in her life since she was a young girl and with this dance of bliss as her inspiration, she continues her Tantric studies under the tutelage of Dr. Douglas Brooks and Dr. Paul Muller Ortega. Recently named by Yoga Journal as one of 21 talented young teachers shaping the future of yoga, Sianna poetically weaves asana, stories, her love of nature and Tantric vision into a colorful tapestry offered from her heart. She leads teacher trainings, workshops and retreats in San Francisco and all around the world with immense appreciation for the great willing hearts of yoga. Awakening the Body, Healing the Spirit

Is it possible that your hard body, so rigorously constructed, is really a means of building armor, to protect yourself? This class will not only focus on core strength and healthy physical alignment, but will also invoke the question of our "life alignment." An aligned body is healthy - an aligned heart and mind is even healthier. This unique practice is designed to awaken the strength of the body and the healing power of the heart. Class will include a short talk, vinyasa-flow, non-dogmatic philosophy, breathing, and meditation.

    The Three Pillars of Yoga
    Intention, Breath, and Movement

Just as hydrogen and oxygen, depending on how they are mixed together, can produce either fire or water, asana practice joined with intention unifying breath, depending on how they mixed together can produce either "just exercise" or can revolutionize our lives. This workshop begins with a talk, and then gentle movement. The class then builds momentum. At the apex of heat and breath we move directly into a special sequence of asanas, which bring the mind into stillness and the body into a new state of energy. The second section of the workshop is dedicated to transformational breath work. This class is both challenging and very healing and is open to all levels. ÊThe principles you will learn in this workshop will take you to new depths in your practice and inspire you for weeks to come. Bring your mat and writing materials. (Please no recording equipment)

    The Healing Power of Forgiveness

"Forgiveness is perhaps the most powerful tool we have for healing ourselves. To forgive another, heals oneself, just as anger toward another poisons oneself." - M.S.

Anger and resentment destroy our lives. For the body to heal, often times what is most vital is to heal the broken heart or spirit. Failure to forgive affects our stress level, power to heal the body, discernment, and all our relationships. Class will integrate non-dogmatic philosophy, gentle yoga movement, breathing exercises, and meditation.Ê Appropriate for all levels.

Max Strom returns for a 3-class series. Born with severe clubbed feet, Max spent much of the first 4 years of his life with his feet confined in plaster casts and braces. After several corrective surgeries, he was able to walk fairly well, and by high school he had developed into a strong, competitive athlete. But it was a powerful epiphany that spun him onto an entirely different path than his classmates. With a new and burning imperative to understand life's meaning, Max immersed himself in spiritual learning and by the age of nineteen had studied Taoism, esoteric Christianity, Sufism, and was practicing meditation and Chi Gung diligently.

Today, Max Strom is known for inspiring and impacting the lives of his students, teaching with the aim of personal transformation and has become one of the most revered and respected Yoga Teachers in the US, Asia, and Europe. He founded Sacred Movement, Center for Yoga and Healing in Los Angeles, and now travels extensively teaching and lecturing on yoga and spirituality. He is recognized by the Yoga Alliance at their Advanced Teacher Level (ERYT). You can see more of his work on his DVDs, Max Strom Yoga - Strength, Grace, and Healing, and, Learn to Breathe, to heal yourself and your relationships. Please visit www.maxstrom.com

Chanting: The Heart of Devotional Yoga
    with Jai Uttal

    Dates/Times:
    Saturday, December 8th 2007
    Door 7:00 pm
    Show 8:00 - 10:00 pm

Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India. With call-and-response group chanting and storytelling, Jai Uttal creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression.

Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai will introduce the ancient practice of "kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This meditative practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Jai will relate stories from the spiritual epics of India as well as from his personal experiences to create a modern context in which to explore this tradition.

"These ancient chants," writes Jai "contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers and expressing a full range of emotions through our voices we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries." The chanting begins as a faint spark and is fanned into a flame of ecstatic awareness by repetition, rhythm, and remembrance of the Divine.

No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique.

Jai Uttal, a sacred music composer, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist, combines influences from India with influences from American rock and jazz, creating a stimulating and exotic multi-cultural fusion that is truly world spirit music. Having traveled extensively in India, where he met many beautiful saints and singers, Bhakti yoga became his personal path. Jai has been leading kirtans around the world for more than 30 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices. His sixth CD, "Mondo Rama", received a Grammy nomination, and he has since released four CDs for the Sounds True label entitled "Kirtan! The Art and Practice of Ecstatic Chant," "Music for Yoga and Other Joys...," "Loveland," and "Pranayama." www.jaiuttal.com

Anusara universal principles of alignment :Celebrate Your Fullness

Life is a full spectrum of experience which yoga helps us to meet with vibrant spirit.

This Saturday afternoon segment will cover a number of asana, focusing on basic alignment principles to create more power and ease, and how yoga enters our daily lives.

Hip, twists and forward folds openers: The Dynamic current

Deeply opening the body helps us access tremendous energy and power within us, and connects us our own limitless nature. This segment focuses on opening the hips and deep twists creating a free flow of "Shakti" or life force in the body. Breathing techniques, or "Pranayama" refine this energy and help us move it consciously.

Back bends: Infinite Capacity of the Heart

Backbends are a powerful balance of exuberantly moving outward from the heart while staying connected to the core of our being. Learn the principles and sequence of poses that create openness and fullness in a variety of backbends.

    Yoga of Simplicity
    with Shastri

    Dates/Times:
    Saturday, August 4th 2007
    1:00 - 4:00 pm

Simplicity is a dire need in the stressful lives we lead. The yogic principle of simplicity is a practice that helps us maintain our lives in a way so that our lives are less complicated and free from the burden of guilt and anxiety. The practice reveals itself through our appearance, our speech, our interpersonal relationships, our reactions and in all our movements. Our faces take on sublimely divine quality that allows us to be free from unconscious contortions which often hide feelings of jealousy, hatred, envy and fear.

This workshop will include a one hour discussion on the "Yoga of Simplicity" followed by a 2 hour guided asana practice starting with a few rounds of Surya Namaskar.

Anirudh Shastri is a well-known and highly respected Yoga teacher with an extensive back ground in Yoga philosophy. He has been teaching for 30 years, bringing his deep knowledge of the physical and spiritual aspects of yogic philosophy to his many students.

      7:00 - 9:30 pm

    TRUST, CONNECTION, PLAYFULNESS
Open your practice with the ease, comfort and the support of a partner. This workshop touches upon all the disciplines that AcroYoga offers, combining Yoga, Acrobatics, and Thai Massage. The class experience includes: Circle Ceremony, Mirrored Asana, Partner Yoga Flow, Assisted Inversions, Basic Partner Acrobatics, Flying Sequences and Thai Massage. Grounded in the breath, we will draw upon the natural forces of gravity and "metta" loving kindness to encourage the body to let go of fear and tension. Students are requested to have familiarity with yoga. No partner necessary!

    LOVE, LIGHT & FLIGHT
Flying is a dance between Shiva & Shakti, that utilizes the compliments of strong grounding energy and fluid receptive energy. It is a practice of giving and receiving, honoring and accepting, inhaling and exhaling that will take both yogis into a new place of union and bliss. The base is the partner that creates a stable platform for the flyer to explore inverted aerial asana flows. The relationship between partners deepens as they exchange roles as flyer and base, increasing their capacity for trust and communication. The flyer receives spinal and muscular release while the base is the recipient of Thai Massage and the Buddhist practice of metta, loving kindness.

Jenny Sauer-Klein is the co-founder of AcroYoga, and is based in Berkeley. She has been teaching yoga and circus arts to adults and children for over 6 years. Entranced by the limitless potential of two or more beings coming together in a devotional, playful and mutually supportive practice, she is certified in Contact Yoga (flying) by its originator, Nateshvar Ken Scott, and has recently traveled to Thailand to deepen her practice of Thai massage. She currently studies with Sianna Sherman (Anusara Yoga) and Sofia Diaz (Hatha Yoga).

    OM Chant with Max Strom

"Chanting Om is one of the most simple, yet moving prayer of love I know." - Max

Chanting Om three times in a yoga class is beneficial, but chanting Om for an hour in a community of people who believe peace is possible is truly a memorable event. The personal affect is a clear calm and joyful state of gratitude for life. The ancient yogis also believed that a chant such as this reverberates through the body of mankind, helping to heal a violent world.

Appropriate for all levels of yoga practitioners.

    Helpful reminders:

    • Avoid eating at least one hour before chanting.
    • Arrive a few minutes early.
    • Leave your cellphone in your car.

    Learn to Breathe to heal
    yourself and your relationships
    Saturday, January 27th 6:30 - 8:30 pm

How does the way we breathe affect our stress level, quality of sleep, depression, and even our relationships? Breath penetrates, breath invigorates, and breath heals.

In this special workshop we will integrate breathing exercises, and gentle movement. The effect of these done in sequence can lead to profound release and calm. Other benefits may include increased energy and mental clarity. Once people have experienced the power of their own breath, they understand why it is called, Life force.

    Dates/Times:
    Saturday, June 17th 2006
    12:00 - 3:00 pm

    Samantha Matthews and Kenny Graham
Everything we do within our lives creates an imprint known as samskara's. In this workshop we will embrace the imprints which continually bring love into our lives and shift the ones that no longer serve us. The attitude we carry within our lives and in our practice and the ways in which we choose to align can bring us more freedom in body, mind and heart.

This is an intermediate/advanced posture practice centered in engaging samskara's through our own personal strength (arm balances) and the courage of heart (backbends). Along with asana we will explore who we are and how we align through the tantric practices of pranayama, meditation and chanting.

Lean how to further your transformation through attitude, action and alignment.

Both Samantha and Kenny are highly skilled, energetic teachers deeply inspired by Anusara Yoga.

    New Years Day Yoga Workshop
    with Kelly McGonigal

    Dates/Times:
    Tapas: The Energy for Change
    Sunday, January 1st 2006
    1:15 - 2:45 pm
    Unconditional Self-Acceptance
    Sunday, January 1st 2006
    3:00 - 4:30 pm

Kelly will be offering two (2) classes on New Years Day. Each are 1.5 hours long with a 15 minute break in between. Details below:

Join Kelly McGonigal, PhD, for two (2) New Year's Day workshops that balance your natural ability for self-transformation with the gift of unconditional self-acceptance. Discover that you can be happy now, even as you pursue change in your life.

    Tapas: The Energy for Change:
Tapas - "the purifying heat" - provides the energy for change in your life. This energy is always available to you - you simply need to tap into it. This vigorous New Year‰s Day practice will help you access your inner tapas, through core strengthening, flowing vinyasa, and the breath. Identify what matters to you, and develop the inner heat, focus, and energy to pursue it with passion.

    Unconditional Self-Acceptance:
One of the greatest barriers to happiness is the belief that there is something fundamentally wrong with us, and that we cannot (and should not) be happy until we fix it. Yoga teaches us that everything we want to be, and everything we want to feel, is already a possibility within us. Yoga helps us cultivate the seeds of possibility. This New Year's Day Practice will focus on finding the joy and peace in every moment, through gentle vinyasa, deep opening, and restorative poses.

Kelly McGonigal teaches yoga and meditation at Stanford University and throughout the Bay Area. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy and the director of Open Mind Open Body, an online community for yoga students and teachers. Her teaching integrates traditional yoga philosophy and practices with contemporary psychology and medicine. She earned her Ph.D. in Psychology and Humanistic Medicine from Stanford University, and is a member of the Avalon Yoga Center teacher training faculty. www.openmindbody.com

    with Phil Jones

    Dates/Times:
    Friday, November 11th 2005
    8:30 - 10:30 pm

During this interactive presentation, Australian sound therapist Phil Jones will teach you how to play the didgeridoo, an ancient and sacred Australian Aboriginal wind instrument made from the eucalyptus tree, hollowed out by white ants, and decorated with symbolic Dreamtime art. Playing the didgeridoo is an entertaining way to explore the power of breath and sound and increase your lung capacity with healing and revitalizing oxygen...shallow breathers, asthmatics, and smokers particularly benefit. You will discover how simple deep breathing exercises, when combined with the mesmerizing primordial sound of the didgeridoo, will effectively:

    • Balance, Harmonize, and Recharge Your Body, Mind, and Soul.
    • Erase "Thought Clutter" and Enhance Objectivity, Insight, and Clarity.
    • Enable You to Authentically Express and Connect with Your Creative and Intutive Self.

Phil will also share the traditional Aboriginal techniques of "Circular/Continuous Breathing" and "Australian Bush" sound effects.

AUTHENTIC AUSTRALIAN DIDGERIDOOS, HANDCRAFTED BY THE ABORIGINAL CLANS, WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

Australian sound therapist Phil Jones, a professional recording artist for the past 35 years, spent seven years studying bhakta yoga with a Hindu saint (Swami Ambikananda) in London, England. Highly inspired by his teacher's message, Phil pioneered the merging of sacred East Indian mantras into a Western musical context during the 1960's and 1970's with his English band Quintessence (Island Records/RCA). Currently, Phil travels extensively across the United States presenting 'Yoga of Breath and Sound" workshops at hospitals, universities, colleges, churches, yoga and wellness centers. Phil has been a guest on numerous radio programs (Sightings, NPR, etc...) and television shows (The Wisdom Channel, ABC, FOX, CBS, NBC, etc...), and is featured performing and teaching the didgeridoo on the IMAX DVD: "Sydney-A Story Of A City."

    Sunday, September 18th 2005
    7:00 - 9:00 pm

Spectacular asanas, stand-up comedy, and big questions. Tripsichore Yoga Theatre evolved its technique by synthesising material from various mainstream and obscure yoga traditions and the result has been a technique that is unique in its approach to directing energy from the practitioners outward. In this solo performance, Edward Clark, Artistic Director of Tripsichore will present selections from Tripsichore's repertoire, a demonstration of technique and his altogether quirky philosophy of yoga and the universe. You won't know whether to hold your sides or scratch your head.

After the show Edward will expound on the Tripsichore approach to bhandas, asana, vinyasa, pranayama, pratayahara, dharana, and dhyana...explaining and demonstrating and involving the audience in how the Tripsichore techniques address these limbs and yoga notions.

    Moving Into Meditation
A two day workshop with Sarah Powers
    Yin/Yang Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation

    Dates/Times:
    Sat. & Sun., May 14th - 15th 2005
    1:00 - 5:00 pm

This workshop will focus on long held, passive Yin postures that prepare the body for sitting meditation. The Yin style also keeps the body supple at its core while encouraging stagnate chi (prana) to flow throughout the joints. A talk will be given each day during the Yin practice on the effects these postures have on the body and mind, with an emphasis on understanding and exploring the 4 foundations of Mindfulness. A Yang flow style asana practice will follow, geared toward strengthening the core while encouraging ease and grace in movement. After pranayama, we will leave time for seated meditation.

This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in taking their practice to an increased level of awareness and stillness, both inside and out. Please be familiar with Yin yoga through a prior class or seeing Sarah's video, Yin and Vinyasa Yoga.

Sarah Powers has been teaching since 1987. She blends the insights and practices of Yoga and Buddhism to create an integral practice. She incorporates both a Yin style of holding poses which emphasizes the balancing of Chi in the meridians and organs, and a Vinyasa style of moving with the breath, blending essential aspects of the Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Viniyoga traditions. Pranayama is also included in her practice and classes.

Sarah has been a student of Buddhism in both Asia and the U.S. She has been inspired by such teachers as Jack Kornfield in the Theravadin tradition (Vipassana), Toni Packer, whose roots stem from the choiceless awareness of the Zen tradition, while Tsoknyi Rinpoche is her Tibetan teacher. She also draws inspiration from the Self Inquiry of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. She lives in Marin, California with her husband Ty, where she homeschools her daughter Imani and teaches yoga and meditation classes. For more on her see her Yin and Vinyasa video/dvd or go to sarahpowers.com
