Mark Singleton, Ph.D.

"Hatha the Way It Was: Yoga Practice in Premodern India"

Sunday, September 5th. 1 - 4 pm

Mark Singleton is a Cambridge University Ph.D., a lecturer at St. John's College, a core faculty member in Avalon's Teacher Training Program, and one of the most influential yoga historians in the world.  Mark is also not coincidentally a supremely talented yogi and yoga instructor.

This past June 12th Mark gave a lecture to a packed house at Avalon on his groundbreaking work in yoga history. Click here for information on that June event.

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - September 3rd through 5th - Mark is returning to Avalon to lead an advanced three-day seminar on yoga history for students and teachers involved in Avalon's 15th Teacher Training Program.

For fun, we've decided to open the doors to Mark's three-hour Sunday class to a maximum of 10 teachers or students besides those involved in the Training Program.

What Mark has planned for this three-hour class is not an dry academic lecture: the third day of his seminar will lead students and yoga teachers in timed stages through the evolution of premodern asana (posture) practice, allowing them to feel their way into yoga the way it was practiced in ancient and medieval times.

Are you under the impression that yoga as it is practiced today is an "ancient art"? You may change your mind after you take this mind-altering and entertaining seminar class.

Price: $60 on a first-come-first-served basis for the first 10 teachers or students who ask to take part in this special three-hour class. (Avalon Teacher Training staff and students do not need to enroll.)

If you want to join us, drop by Avalon, email us at info@avalonyoga.com with payment information, or phone us at 650-324-2517. Enrollment is strictly limited.

Sarah Powers
Moving Into Meditation: Yin/Yang Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation

A Two-Day Workshop with Sarah Powers

Saturday and Sunday, October 23-24
1 - 4 pm both days

On October 23-24, the internationally famous Yin yoga teacher and author Sarah Powers will return for an intense two-day Workshop that covers both Mindfulness Meditation and Yin/Yang Yoga techniques.

In the meditative sections of the workshop, Sarah will focus on the first two (of four) foundations of Mindfulness training on Saturday and the second two on Sunday. The Yin/Yang Yoga sessions will hone in on the kidneys and on backbends on the first day and on lung energy, standing poses, and investions on Sunday.

Prices and Registration: Preference in enrollment for this Workshop, which is certain to be a sell-out, is given to those registering for both days.

Price for both events: $145 in advance, $155 first day if there are any last minute cancellations.

Single sessions: $75 in advance, $85 day of the event in case of cancellations.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who has been doing Yoga for at least one
year and has a strong interest in meditation.

Biography: Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She is the founder and author of Insight Yoga, which interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga, Buddhism, Chinese medicine, and Transpersonal Psychology into an integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of floor poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with an alignment-based slow flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachings.

Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our emotional difficulties is paramount for preparing one to deepen and nourish insights into one's essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. Her main teachers are Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Jennifer Welwood, Lama Tsultrim Allione, and Lama Pema Dorje.
